A Generative Theory of Tonal Music Fred Lerdahl, Ray Jackendoff

Before getting his Master's, he worked in collaboration with composer Fred Lerdahl, creating software based on the Generative Theory of Tonal Music. PThis work, which has become a classic in music theory since its publication in 1983, models music understanding from the perspective of cognitive science. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1983. A Generative Theory of Tonal Music. The third, Jackendoff and Lerdahl's A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, deals with an attempt to create a theory for musical perception and cognition. At the same time, he did some truly pioneering work in the growing field of music cognition and coauthored A Generative Theory of Tonal Music.
